Iran’s largest city and capital, Tehran, is located in the northern part of the country. The city and its surrounding region are home to more than 16 million people, making Tehran the second-largest urban area in the Middle East after Cairo, Egypt.

Despite being thousands of years old, Tehran is a modern city. Public transportation is available via its contemporary subway system, rapid transit bus system, and trolley buses. A portion of the vast Sa'dabad Complex today serves as the official home of Iran’s president. The remainder of the complex’s buildings are home to museums that are open to the public. These include former royal residences that have been preserved; the Museum of Fine Arts; the Museum of Natural History; the Military Museum; and the Green Palace Museum, among others. The Green Palace is considered by many to be the most beautiful building in Iran.

Because it is the country’s largest city, Tehran also serves as the culture and education hub for Iran.
