Iran’s largest city and capital, Tehran, is located in the northern part of the country. The city and its surrounding region are home to more than 16 million people, making Tehran the second-largest urban area in the Middle East after Cairo, Egypt.

Tehran is a modern city with ancient roots. According to some archeological evidence, the city’s history dates back as far as 6000 BCE. Because of its long history, today Tehran is home to several important historical buildings and other sites.

Business class flights to Tehran arrive at Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA). The airport, which opened in 2004, is located about 20 miles south of the main city near the Tehran suburbs of Robat Karim and Eslamshahr. Imam Khomeini International Airport is a hub for several airlines including Iran Air; Caspian Airlines; Mahan Air; Zagros Airlines; Iran Aseman Airlines, and Iran Airtour, among others. More than 2 million passengers pass through Imam Khomeini International Airport each year. One of the more popular routes is on flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Tehran.

Flights to Tehran also sometimes arrive at the city’s older airport, Mehrabad International Airport (THR), which was built in the late 1930s. Once Tehran’s main airport, Mehrabad International today generally serves domestic air traffic, although it is sometimes used to handle overflow from Imam Khomeini International Airport. Mehrabad International Airport is also used by the country’s military.

Despite being thousands of years old, Tehran is a modern city. Public transportation is available via its contemporary subway system, rapid transit bus system, and trolley buses. The city’s roads and highways are well maintained. Many of the city’s residents, along with visitors who take flights to Tehran, also take advantage of its Bdood dockless bicycle-sharing system. The bicycles are available twenty-four hours a day at nearly 30 locations throughout the city.

Among Tehran’s most celebrated historic sites are its royal palace complexes. The city is home to three such locations: Golestan Palace, built in the 16th century; the Sa'dabad Complex, built in the 19th century; and the Niavaran Palace Complex, built in the 18th century.

A portion of the vast Sa'dabad Complex today serves as the official home of Iran’s president. The remainder of the complex’s buildings are home to museums that are open to the public. These include former royal residences that have been preserved; the Museum of Fine Arts; the Museum of Natural History; the Military Museum; and the Green Palace Museum, among others. The Green Palace is considered by many to be the most beautiful building in Iran.

Because it is the country’s largest city, Tehran also serves as the culture and education hub for Iran. Students from throughout the country, and from other countries in the Middle East, take cheap flights to Tehran, Iran, in order to attend one of the city’s more than 50 prestigious colleges and universities. A few of Tehran’s universities are considered to be among the best in the Middle East. These include the University of Tehran; the Tehran University of Medical Sciences; the Amirkabir University of Technology; and the Sharif University of Technology.

Tehran is also a city of parks and green spaces. It is home to more than 2,000 parks covering nearly 20 percent of the city’s overall area. Nearly all of Tehran’s parks and green spaces are beautifully landscaped with trees, flowers, public art, and water features. Because of this and the city’s warm year-round climate, Tehran residents and visitors alike spend a great deal of time outdoors.

Because the city is a cultural center, tourists from throughout the Middle East often book cheap business class flights to Tehran to attend live theater and musical performances and to visit the city’s museums. The city’s Vahdat Hall performing arts center is home to the Tehran Symphony Orchestra, the Tehran Opera, and the Iranian National Ballet Company. Touring performances and musical acts also frequent the multi-venue City Theater of Iran complex.

Visitors who book flights to Tehran also enjoy attending sports games. Football (soccer) is very popular there, and the city is home to six professional teams. The city’s arena, the National Stadium of Azadi, has a capacity of nearly 80,000 and is the largest stadium in western Asia.
