Considered one of the oldest civilizations in the world, those who book flights to Iran can look forward to a country with rich history, friendly citizens, ancient architecture, and an enduring culture. Also known as Persia, the Islamic Republic of Iran is nestled between the Caspian Sea to the north and the Gulf of Persia to the southwest. Iran shares a border with Middle East neighbors Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan to the north and northwest, as well as Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan to the east.

Though the Iranian government has certain rules foreign travelers must follow when touring the country, it has come a long way in cultivating tourism, which has increased dramatically since the late 90s. Prior to COVID-19, Iran saw as many as 7 to 10 million tourists annually.

For many who book flights to Iran, tourists are relatively unrestricted in their access to the country and its many sites and destinations. For American, British, and Canadian travelers who fly to Iran, the Iranian government requires that these travelers have a mandatory guide to take them around the country. This requirement is the result of tense relations between the Iranian government and the governments of the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. However, for those who aren’t required to have a guide, it is strongly recommended, as there is a big language barrier. Many Iranians don’t have a strong understanding of English, and unless travelers are adept at Persian, communication could be difficult.

It is also strongly advised that travelers who purchase tickets to Iran “dress modestly.” This rule applies mostly to women, as the Iranian government requires women to wear a Hijab. This can mean wearing a hat or a headscarf. Other clothing requirements apply to both men and women and revolve around covering up arms, legs, and torsos. In public spaces, men must wear long pants and shirts with sleeves (no shorts or tank tops). Women must wear long-sleeve tops that also cover their waists, as well as skirts or pants that extend down to their ankles.

Whether one books an expensive flight or a cheap flight to Iran, all international travel is served through Imam Khomeini International Airport (IATA), the main international airport in Iran. Located 19 miles outside of the capital city of Tehran, Khomeini International Airport is a great starting point for visitors to explore the many sites Iran has to offer.

In Tehran, tourists are treated to plenty of historical sites and modern amenities. One of the main destinations for visitors who purchase tickets to Iran is The Grand Bazaar. This central shopping center spans over 6 miles of corridors filled with shops, mosques, banks, and more. Though much of its construction is relatively new, there are some buildings that are over 400 years old, and The Grand Bazaar itself is rooted in the tradition of trade and bazaar culture of the Middle East region.

For tourists interested in history, the National Museum of Iran in Tehran incorporates two complexes — the Museum of Ancient Iran and the Museum of Islamic Archaeology and Art of Iran. Together, these complexes offer ancient and medieval artifacts that provide a rich scope of the history of the region and its people. Visitors can awe over pottery, antiquities, rare books, ancient coins, and other cultural artifacts.

For tourists who book flights to Iran and want to take in more of the culture, many choose to visit the city of Isfahan. With over 2.2 million residents, this city is the second-largest in Iran after Tehran, and archaeologists believe that Isfahan dates back to the paleolithic era, based on archaeological finds that point to early human habitation.

Visually, Isfahan is breathtaking. The Masjed-e Shah mosque is composed of blue-tile mosaics that give tourists an incredible view. Elsewhere, the city is known for lush Persian gardens and beautiful streets lined with cultivated trees. Isfahan is home to fine Persian carpets, incredible foods, sweets, association football clubs, and plenty of shopping. Travelers who fly to Iran and explore Isfahan won’t be disappointed by its cultural offerings.
