Flights to Ulaanbataar, Mongolia, arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN), the only international airport in the country. The airport opened in 2021, replacing the smaller Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport. Direct flights to Ulaanbataar are available from several cities in Asia including Seoul, Istanbul, Beijing, Tokyo, Phuket, and Bangkok. Chinggis Khaan International Airport serves about 1.8 million domestic and international passengers each year.
Tourists who book Ulaanbataar flights often come to the city to visit its historic sites, Buddhist monasteries, and museums. These include several Buddhist temples, the National Museum of Mongolia, and the Choijin Lama Monastery, which escaped being destroyed by the Soviets when it was made into a museum.
The Gandan Monastery, also referred to as the Gandantegchinlen Monastery (which means “complete rejoicing” in Tibetan) is the main Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. Built in the early 19th century, it’s an iconic and storied monastery that at one point, during the Second World War, was closed due to persecution. Today, it’s a cultural epicenter for worshippers and a stop for many visitors to Ulaanbataar.
For many tourists who fly to Ulaanbataar, no trip is complete without a visit to Sukhbaatar Square (formerly called Genghis Khan Square). This public square is at the center of everything, serving as the home of many concerts and festivals, as well as permanent fixtures like governmental buildings, the National Modern Art Gallery, and the Mongolian State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet. The statues of many of Mongolia’s heroes and important figureheads can also be found here.
Outdoor enthusiasts also book flights to Ulaanbataar to explore its rich natural landscape and scenic offerings. The city is just a short distance from Bogd Khan Uul Biosphere Reserve. The nature reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to Bogd Khan Mountain, which local people consider holy. The reserve is home to a number of threatened animal species due to its variety of natural habitats.
Ulaanbataar is home to eight of Mongolia’s universities, making it a destination for students. The city’s largest and oldest university, the National University of Mongolia, was founded in 1942. Today the school has an enrollment of about 21,000 students. Other universities in the city include the Mongolian University of Science and Technology, the Mongolian University of Life Sciences, the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, and the Mongolian State University of Education, making the city a well-rounded hub for education and advancement.
