Seville is located in the southwest section of Spain and is the capital of Andalusia. Seville features a current population of just under 700,000 residents. The gorgeous Guadaliquiver bisects the city making for many memorable landscapes and views across Seville. Seville has become the political, artistic, cultural, and business epicenter of southern Spain. It's especially nice to see if you're coming in off a business class flight; overhead the historic landmarks yield a whole new perspective.
Seville is over 2000 years old and has been preserved beautifully throughout history. If you love the Roman period, there are several ruins to be found in and out of the city. If you travel 5 miles out of the city you will come across a Roman aqueduct. It is incredible to take this in and imagine what life was like in this area when Rome was still at its most powerful.
As you discover the area you will find a heavy Moorish influence as well. One of the most famous monuments in the city is the Gothic Cathedral of Seville which was built from 1401-1519 on top of a Moorish mosque. The Giralda minaret was transformed into a bell tower. The Cathedral is one of the largest and most awe-inspiring cathedrals in existence and should not be missed. You have to experience the stunning interior as well as the longest nave in Spain.
Across from the Cathedral, you will find Alcazar. This was an original Moorish palace from 1181, today it features influences from the Renaissance and Mudelar style. While here you must take in the gorgeous gardens. Another popular historical attraction in the area is the ancient watchtower known as Torro del Oro, which was a defensive barrier built on the river. At the base of the tower, a chain was strung across the river to prevent boats from entering the port.
Once you have visited many of the fine historical monuments Seville has to offer you can take in one of the many museums. The Fine Art Museum is one of the most striking, established in 1835 and originally housed in an old friary. The works you will find here are considered second best in Spain only to the Prado in Madrid. Other interesting museums in the area include the Flamenco Art Museum, Maritime Meseum, and the Bullfight Museum.
