Tips for Doing Business in Japan

Posted by Kseniya G

Before booking your next Business Class flight to Japan, consider some of our tips before attending your business meeting. It is no secret that the Japanese culture is abundant with intricate customs, traditions and social norms. What is set as a norm in the Western cultures may be on the opposite spectrum of what is found acceptable in Japan. We sought out the most beneficial tips for you to use during your next business meeting in Japan.

  1. Bows instead of handshakes

Even if Westerners aren’t expected to bow, showing the gesture will score you some sake points. When bowing in front of someone, it is all about showing the level of respect. The lower and timely the bow, the more respect you will show for the person in front of you. Keep in mind that hierarchy and rank is of importance. Save the deepest bow for the person in highest position.

  1. Exchange of business cards

In Japan, the exchange of business cards is quite ceremonious. Given that the card represents you, it should be treated and provided to anyone of interest with respect. The card should be held with both hands on the corners right next to you. Also, the person in charge should receive the card first, followed by people ranking from highest to lowest. When accepting the cards, also use both hands, keep the higher rank on top, organize them and stow away in a card holder, NOT your wallet! As mentioned above, the card represents you and should be given with integrity, never to be showed on a table.

  1. Communication

communication

When it comes to communication and negotiations in Japan’s business meetings, the flow of negotiations may seem vague. The reasoning behind this being that in Japanese culture abrupt or certain conclusions may seem offensive. At times, when faced with a direct proposal, the person may imply that they would like to proceed, just to not offend you, when in reality they may mean the opposite. It would be helpful for you to keep this in mind and clarify whenever uncertain.  Also, unlike the Western culture where the presentation assumes the audience does not know much about the subject and chews the information for the people, in Japan, the audience is expected to come to a meeting well prepared and fully knowledgeable of the subject.

Overall, the Japanese culture is very detail-oriented. It is a culture that is built on rapport, trust and respect. On your Business Class flight to Japan, practice being polite, mindful and humble, and you will do just fine on your business meeting that follows.
