The first overseas experience was our trip from San Francisco to Hong Kong in First Class. After testing the traveling waters domestically and loving every vacation minute of it, we decided to venture out abroad. Nearly 7,000 miles abroad that is. This was also our very first time flying in First Class with Singapore Airlines. From amenities, flat bed seats, First Class wine list and menu, to superb service, flying like a celebrity was an experience in itself.
So, what was Hong Kong like? It was spectacular! It is definitely on the go to and come back list of ours. Given that we only spent three days there, the city has gifted us with memories to cherish for life. Our hotel was located in a quaint center of skyscrapers, mixed with old apartment buildings, which were reminiscent of the scenes from the movie “Inception”. The downtown area definitely has a vibe of organized chaos. From unending shops and stores on street level, to buildings under construction, to fresh eggs and raw meat just chillin’ outside in 90 degree inferno, the twists and turns of crowded and narrow streets, the surprising amount of English speaking residents and business people, great restaurants at affordable prices and familiar menus. Yet the city stood out to us as being very charming and clean.
Upon friend’s recommendations, we decided to stay at LKF Hotel, where we were greeted at the counter with ice cold bottled water, which felt like oasis in July weather. The front desk representatives were very polite, friendly and genuine. The room, of course, was exceptional-clean, spacious, modern, with a window wrapping the bathroom counter, overlooking a myriad of skyscrapers. The backdoor of the hotel leads to an alley full of little shops and restaurants, which by night turn into bars, clubs and lounges full of friendly youngsters, eager to celebrate life.
Since our stay in Hong Kong was brief, we decided to visit one of its’ main attractions-Victoria Peak. In order to get to the mountain top, we took the “Tram”, an iconic trolley, similar to those in San Francisco. The ride up the steep hill was refreshing-morning air, greenery and the thrill of riding at what seemed like 45 degree angle! Finally atop, we were in disbelief at what we saw. The view was astounding! A jungle of skyscrapers surrounding the bay, with the tallest one being The International Commerce Centre, reaching at 1,588 ft high. We froze in awe to capture that moment, where you pause to think, that you are grateful to be alive.
