Sapporo
Located on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, Sapporo is rich in culture. The city is well known for its cuisine, especially for the beer made at the local Sapporo Brewery, the oldest brewery in Japan. Sapporo is also the birthplace of miso ramen, a soup dish that is now popular around the world. Due to its coastal location, seafood dishes of all kinds are also commonly eaten in the city.
More than 2 million people attend Sapporo’s annual Snow Festival, held for a week during February. The festival, which takes place in several city parks, features snow and ice sculptures created by local artists as well as sledding hills, concerts, and a variety of food.
Among the city’s most notable landmarks are the wooden Sapporo Clock Tower, built in the late 19th century, the Hokkaido Shinto Shrine, and the nearly 500-foot-tall Sapporo TV Tower, built in the 1950s.
