Founded in 1909 as a settlement by Jewish residents of the nearby city of Jaffa, Tel Aviv was considered part of Jaffa until 1921 when it became an independent city. Located on the Mediterranean coast of Israel, Tel Aviv has grown rapidly throughout its short history, becoming home to Jewish immigrants and refugees from around the world. Today, the city of Tel Aviv is the largest in Israel after Jerusalem with a population of just under half a million people. One of Tel Aviv’s most popular museums is the Beit Hatfutsot museum, which is owned and operated by Tel Aviv University. The Beit Hatfutsot museum interprets the history and stories of Jewish people throughout the world.

Tel Aviv is a popular destination for sports fans, especially fans of basketball and football (soccer). The city’s Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball Club has won several titles and championships across both Israel and Europe. The city is home to several football (soccer) teams and stadiums. The Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club, Tel Aviv’s professional team, has a large fan base.

Rowing, beach paddleball, running, and baseball also have followings in the city. Nearly 20,000 people participate in the annual Tel Aviv Marathon each year.
