Sicily is a major destination for tourists in the Mediterranean. Flights to Sicily, Italy, arrive at one of the island’s eight different airports. Most travelers who fly to Sicily arrive at Catania Fontanarossa International Airport (CTA), which is the island’s largest. Located in the city of Catania on Sicily’s east coast, the airport handles more than 10 million passengers each year. Catania Fontanarossa International Airport is a hub for Ryanair and Wizz Air, both low-cost carriers. Travelers who want to book cheap flights to Sicily should consider arriving at this airport.

Many flights to Sicily also arrive at Palermo International Airport (PMO), which is located in the island’s capital city, Palermo, on the northwest coast. Palermo International Airport (PMO) serves a little over 7 million passengers each year. Because Palermo is Sicily’s main economic hub, business travelers who book tickets to Sicily often choose to use this airport.

The island’s economy has traditionally been based on agriculture. Farms in Sicily produce a variety of products including olives, olive oil, citrus fruits, tomatoes, almonds, pistachios, grapes, wines, and artichokes. In addition to agriculture, Sicily’s economy is also dependent on manufacturing and food processing. This island is one of the largest sea salt producers in the world.

Many of the business travelers who fly to Sicily work in the shipbuilding industry. Palermo is home to the renowned Fincantieri shipyard, which manufactures many of the world’s luxury cruise ships.

Tourists fly to Sicily year-round to visit the island’s many UNESCO World Heritage sites, ancient archeological sites and ruins, historic castles, and quaint villages. The island is known for its excellent wine and cuisine as well as for its natural beauty. In addition to its mountains, Sicily is home to many popular beaches and resorts, art museums, and festivals.

Visitors also book flights to Sicily to experience its music and culture. Palermo is home to the Teatro Massimo, Italy’s largest opera house and one of the largest in Europe. The Teatro Massimo Bellini, an opera house located in Catania, is considered to have the best acoustics of any opera house in Europe. The island is known for its fine terracotta ceramics and has been home to several influential artists, writers, and composers.

For tourists who fly into Sicily, one of the more popular destinations is the city of Syracuse. Other destinations include the Palazzo dei Normanni (Norman Palace) in Palermo, which was once the seat of power for the former rulers of Sicily. Over the years, this palace has had numerous purposes, but it was first the Norman Palace after an invasion by the Normans in 1072 CE. Today, the public can tour this palace and see its gorgeous artwork and mosaics that date back to the 12th century.

Southwest of Cefalu is the Lavatoio Medievale, which is a site from the early 16th century that draws thousands of history buffs each year. This medieval building, which was constructed over the Cefalino River, was used as a “wash house” for laundry. Up until the 20th century, it was in active use. Restored and opened to the public, this building is one of the many interesting sites people fly to Sicily for.

Notable people with ties to Sicily include classical composers Vincenzo Bellini, Giovanni Pacini, and Alessandro Scarlatti; Nobel Prize-winning writers Salvatore Quasimodo and Luigi Pirandello; Italian Renaissance painter Antonello da Messina; and Italian-American aircraft designer Giuseppe Mario Bellanca. His Bellanca C.F. aircraft, one of the first enclosed airplanes, is on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.
