Today, it’s a tourist attraction, partly because it was used as a prison by Dionysius I, who supposedly used the echoes and reverberations of sound within this system as a way to listen in on his prisoners.

Notable people with ties to Syracuse include the ancient Greek mathematician and physicist Archimedes who was born and lived in the city during the 3rd century BCE. Also from Syracuse is the Roman Catholic Saint Lucy who was martyred in the city in the 3rd century CE. Saint Lucy is also recognized by the Lutheran and Anglican churches and is often associated with the Christmas season as her saint’s day is December 13.
