Flights to Zadar, Croatia, arrive at Zadar International Airport (ZAD), located in the nearby suburb of Zemunik Donji. The airport handles a little more than 800,000 passengers each year. Many of the tourists who fly to Zadar come from countries in Western Europe. Direct flights to Zadar are available from more than 70 European cities including Paris, Vienna, Munich, Copenhagen, and London.
Because the low-cost airline Ryanair has a large presence at Zadar International Airport, cheap flights to Zadar, Croatia, are available from several cities across Europe.
Among Zadar’s most popular sites are its Roman forum, built in the 3rd century; the 12th century Saint Anastasia Cathedral, the largest church in Dalmatia; the Museum of Ancient Glass; and the Romanesque Saint Mary Church, built in 1105. Also of note is the Sea Organ, an art installation and musical instrument that uses the ocean’s waves to produce sound.
The Roman Forum is located in the heart of Zadar, and it’s free and open to the public. Visitors can come and walk through it, admiring its open space and construction. In former times, this was the site of many public events and gatherings, and today it still serves that purpose. For a better view of the forum, many climb the St. Anastasia Cathedral’s bell tower, which offers more of a bird’s eye view of the forum. Just a short walk over from the forum is the Archaeological Museum of Zadar.
This museum features numerous artifacts from Prehistoric eras through the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Roman era, and more. It includes many stone monuments and sculptures, as well as an exhibit on underwater archaeology, which history buffs and travelers often find fascinating.
For adventures outside of the city, many tourists who fly to Zadar often visit its beaches or take a day trip to Dugi Otok Island, which is a beautiful locale in the Adriatic Sea full of coastal views and nature parks for tourists to hike.
Just north of Zadar is Pag Island, which is another popular destination for visitors. This island is known for its olives and grapes, many of which are used in wine-making, as well as its cheese, which is made from sheep’s milk.
In addition to tourism, Zadar’s economy is also partially dependent on fishing and maritime trade and transport. The city is also a center for banking, finance, and heavy manufacturing in Croatia.
Students from across Croatia and other parts of Eastern Europe also fly to Zadar. The city is home to the public University of Zadar. The school was originally founded in the 14th century, making it the oldest university in the country. The university has an enrollment of 6,000 students.
