Cheap flights to Vientiane, Laos, are sometimes available during the off-season winter months. A few low-cost airlines may also offer cheap flights to Vientiane including West Air and Jin Air.

Among Vientiane’s most-visited attractions is the Pha That Luang temple complex, built in the 3rd century CE. The gold-covered temple is one of the most well-known buildings in Laos and is considered a symbol of the city. Tourists who fly to Vientiane also often visit the smaller Wat Si Muang temple, built in the mid-1500s. The Patuxai archway, modeled after the L’Arc de Triomphe in Paris, is also one of Vientiane’s most recognizable sites. Built in the 1960s, the large archway serves as a war memorial for the Laotian citizens who died in the country’s war of independence from France in the early 1950s.

Vientiane has a population of just over 1 million people. It is considered an up-and-coming economic center in Asia with tourism, education, and finance being its major industries.

Fans of history who fly to Vientiane often visit the Ho Phrakeo Museum, also known as the Haw Phra Kaew. This museum was originally built in 1565 to house the Emerald Buddha, a semi-precious green stone Buddha covered in gold. This statue, which currently resides in Bangkok is a religiously significant and spiritual image that saw much fighting and movement over the years across a variety of Asian countries. Though no longer at the Ho Phrakeo Museum, instead a variety of religious art is exhibited.

The Lao National Museum is another favorite spot for tourists interested in history. Originally the French governor’s residence, this building now exhibits artifacts from the history of Laos, including its struggle for independence from French colonialism.

Other culturally significant locations include the Wat Si Saket, a Buddhist temple not too far from Ho Phrakeo. This temple features over 2,000 Buddha images in its museum, made from mostly ceramics and silver. For those interested in Buddhist sculptures and don’t mind a drive, the Buddha Park is 15 miles southeast of Vientiane. This park features over 200 Hindu and Buddhist statues in a park known for its beautiful landscaping and scenery. Many tourists who book flights to Vientiane make it a point to stop at this tourist destination.

For visitors who want a taste of Laotian culture, the Khou Din Market is a must-see destination. This market features various traditional foods, crafts, and wares. It’s a great way for tourists to submerge themselves in the country and its people.
