For visitors looking to book flights to Nara, Japan, the most efficient route is to fly into Kansai International Airport (KIX) Osaka, as Nara doesn’t have its own airport. From there, visitors can hop on a train to Nara City, which usually takes a little over half an hour. Cheap flights to Nara, Japan, by way of Kansai International Airport, are available from many discount airlines.

One of the most popular destinations in Nara is the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This collection of eight locations includes five Buddhist temples, a Shinto shrine, Heijo Palace Park, and an old-growth forest.

While Heijo Palace Park doesn’t include the palace that once stood there roughly 1,300 years ago, today it’s a green space that includes a museum and historical reconstructions. Since the 1950s, much archaeological research has been conducted on the open grounds, and some of the findings are on display in theHeijo Palace Park Museum. Two gates, the Suzaku Gate and Daigoku Gate are also reconstructed, as well as the East Palace Garden, which offers a beautiful setting to walk around and explore.

Visitors who book flights to Nara City can also explore Todaiji Temple, which is both a landmark of the city and one of the most famous temples in all of Japan. It features a large, bronze Buddha statue, as well as one of the world’s largest wooden buildings wherein said statue is located. There is also a museum onsite which features religious art and treasures.

For tourists who want a mix of history and shopping, the Naramachi district of Nara City is the best of both worlds. Formerly the merchant district, this area is filled with classic dwellings designed for merchants to run their stores and live above them during closed hours. Many of these buildings, known as machiya, have been preserved and reopened as museums. Amongst Naramachi, however, are a plethora of stores, cafes, and restaurants with delicious offerings and unique items for sale.

For nature lovers who book flights to Nara City, Mount Wakakusayama is a grassy slope that visitors are allowed to visit throughout most of the year. Only closed in the winter, this natural landscape offers some of the best views of Nara, and in spring, is a great spot to view blooming cherry blossoms. For many visitors, the climb from the base up to Mount Wakakusayama takes between 45 minutes and an hour. Not too far from the mountain, Isuien Garden offers the beauty of nature with the pruning and cultivation of a gardener’s deft hand.

Isuien is a traditional Japanese garden with several teahouses on its premises. The front part of Isuien dates back to the mid-17th century, and the larger, more expansive part behind it is more recent, having been added at the end of the 19th century. Beyond the breathtaking natural features, there is a small museum on-site with a collection of local art.

A flight to Nara, Japan wouldn’t be complete without tasting some of the local cuisine. While there are plenty of traditional and fusion restaurants in Nara, one of the more popular spots is Parco, which specializes in seafood pancakes. One of the benefits of Parco is that its menu features English-language choices, making it easier for many tourists to dine and enjoy the delectable dishes Nara has to offer.
