Located on a manufactured island in Osaka Bay, Kansai International Airport (KIX) was built in 1994 to serve the international flights that once arrived and departed from the older Osaka International Airport Itami, which had become overcrowded. Today, the only available flights to Osaka Airport Itami originate within Japan. However, increased flights to KIX have opened a gateway to business travel and tourism to major destinations in Japan.
For those taking a flight to Kansai International Airport, it’s worth knowing that the airport is connected to the mainland via the Sky Gate Bridge. It is the world’s longest double-decker truss bridge, handling six lanes of traffic on its upper deck and a passenger rail line on its lower deck.
KIX serves the greater Osaka area, including the cities of Kyoto, Kobe, and Osaka, Japan. Flights to KIX are available from airports around the world. Flights to Kansai International Airport are often more frequent from cities with large populations of people who are of Japanese origin. This includes flights from Honolulu (HNL) to KIX and flights from Portland, Oregon, (PDX) to KIX along with other large cities on the West Coast of North America.
Kansai International Airport has two terminals. The airport’s Terminal 1 is 1.7-miles long and is the longest airport terminal in the world. In addition to being the hub for passenger airlines Japan Airlines, Peach Aviation, and All Nippon Airways, KIX is also an important Asian center for commercial freight carriers, such as FedEx Express.
KIX handles more than 25 million passengers per year, both in flights to the Osaka airport and departing from it. The Osaka Prefecture, which includes eight major cities, is a frequent destination for business travelers. The region is home to the Osaka Stock Exchange as well as to global electronics manufacturers Sharp and Panasonic. Three major Japanese universities are also located in the Osaka Prefecture.
Leisure travelers who book flights to KIX often come to the area to visit the historic Osaka Castle, one of Japan’s most iconic buildings, and the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, which is located on Osaka Bay and is one of the largest aquariums in the world open to the public.
Transportation to and from KIX is available via train, bus, taxi, or high-speed ferry. Kansai International Airport is also home to five high-rise garages that offer both long- and short-term parking.
Passengers arriving at KIX by car or ferry can visit the airport’s Sky View Observation Hall, an observation deck offering views of the entire airport and Osaka Bay. The Sky View Observation Hall is closed during the winter months, so make sure your flight to KIX is during the seasons when the hall is open.
