A territory of the United Kingdom, Gibraltar is on a peninsula located off of the southeastern coast of Spain, between the European and African mainlands. It is recognizable by its most prominent feature, the Rock of Gibraltar, a 1,400-foot-tall limestone outcrop in its center that can be seen from many miles away. Gibraltar is home to about 33,000 people who are spread out among the territory’s four settlements.
Flights to Gibraltar arrive at Gibraltar International Airport (GIB). The airport is located at the northern end of the peninsula near the Spanish border. Gibraltar International Airport serves about 600,000 passengers each year, many of whom are tourists who fly to Gibraltar from the United Kingdom to enjoy its warm climate, beaches, and beautiful natural landscape.
Tickets to Gibraltar from London Heathrow Airport are available on regularly scheduled flights operated by British Airways. Cheap flights to Gibraltar from London Gatwick Airport, Manchester, and Bristol, UK, can sometimes be booked on the British low-cost airline easyJet.
Some of the people who fly to Gibraltar are business travelers. The territory is home to a large financial services sector. Shipping and logistics, along with tourism, also make up a large part of Gibraltar’s economy.
In addition to its beaches, tourists who book flights to Gibraltar also come to the territory to shop. There is no sales tax levied on goods purchased by non-Gibraltar residents. Many large British department stores and high-end fashion chains maintain stores in Gibraltar for this reason.
Because Gibraltar was originally developed as a port, it eventually added marinas after World War II, which made it a destination for yachts and cruise ships. This sparked a boom in tourism, and casinos, stores, hotels, and other accommodations soon followed. Old military buildings were refashioned as stores and tourist-centric locales, and many other parts of Gibraltar were redeveloped and rebuilt to accommodate this boom in travelers, especially in the 1980s and beyond.
Among the more historically significant cultural offerings of the area, tourists who book flights to Gibraltar can visit the Gorham’s Cave Complex, which is a series of sea caves where artifacts and evidence of Neanderthals were found. The Mediterranean Steps, just east of the Rock of Gibraltar, are comprised of a winding path and steps along the coastal cliff that offer great sights for visitors. With an unparalleled view of North Africa, tourists also can spot remnants of World War II fortifications, caves, and open platforms for viewing. Both the Mediterranean Steps and the Gorham’s Cave Complex are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
For animal lovers, both the Rock of Gibraltar and an area called the “Apes’ Den” offer tourists access to view and photograph Barbary Mac ques, prominent primate residents who were believed to have been important to Gibraltar from North Africa. Travelers can also book dolphin-watching tours, check out native partridges, and find plenty of wildlife, like the Ocellated Lizard, in the beautiful scenery that adorns Gibraltar.
For those who fly to Gibraltar, there are plenty of other sights available. Visitors can find memorials and museums dedicated to both World War I and World War II. There is also the Alameda Gardens, which was first opened in 1816 and has offered natural beauty and splendor ever since. St. Michael’s Cave, a location with an upper and lower part, is also a perfect location for adventurers. While the upper part was used as a makeshift hospital in World War II, Lower St. Michael’s Cave is more of a recent discovery and features a stunning lake.
