Many of the people who book flights to Aberdeen work in the oil and natural gas industry. The city’s proximity to the North Sea’s oil rigs has made it a hub for this industry. Aberdeen Harbor is often full of oil tankers.

Students are also among the people who frequently fly to Aberdeen. The city is home to two universities, the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University. The two schools combined have an enrollment of about 34,000 students.

Direct flights to Aberdeen, UK, arrive at Aberdeen International Airport (ABZ) located in the suburb of Dyce, about 6 miles from Aberdeen’s city center. The airport handles about 2 million passengers each year traveling on flights to and from several cities in Europe. Low-cost airlines with a presence at the airport, such as Ryanair and EasyJet, may make booking cheap flights to Aberdeen possible during certain times. Travelers who plan to fly to Aberdeen should note that flights to and from some cities only operate on a seasonal basis.

Because of its age, Aberdeen is home to a number of historic buildings and sites. Much of the city’s current infrastructure was built during the 19th century using locally quarried granite, which is why Aberdeen is sometimes referred to as the “Granite City.” Notable city buildings include its neoclassical Music Hall, built in the 1850s, and The National Bank of Scotland, built in the 1820s.

The city is also known for its many large parks and green spaces. Once a private estate, Hazelhead Park is more than 180 acres in size and encompasses an intact forest. The 44-acre Duthie Park is known for its greenhouses which house its David Welch Winter Gardens, a collection of tropical and subtropical plants open to the public year-round.

In part due to its status as an active port city, the Aberdeen Maritime Museum is a popular stop for tourists. Located in Shiprow, the maritime museum’s aim is to provide education and artifacts about Aberdeen’s close history and ties to the sea. From its foundation as a port to the construction of sailing ships and offshore oil drilling, the Aberdeen Maritime Museum offers an all-encompassing history lesson for this part of the United Kingdom.

For fans of castles, there are three nearby castles all within a reasonable driving distance. Dunnottar Castle sits to the south of Aberdeen on a rocky cliff that overlooks the North Sea on three sides. This building was believed to have been constructed in the 15th or 16th century, and today it is a popular spot for tourists looking to see a once-impregnable fortress. To the west of Aberdeen sits the Crathes Castle. Built in the late 16th century, this castle is still in active use today, as the Burnett of Leys family that historically owned it still resides within the castle walls. Though occupied, the castle belongs to the National Trust of Scotland and has many parts of it open to the public for tours. Not too far from Crathes is the Drum Castle, another ancestral seat of a Scottish clan. This, too, is open to the public for tours.

Notable people with ties to Aberdeen include early 19th-century poet Lord Byron; pop musician and singer Annie Lenox; and Scottish mountaineer Andy Nisbet.
