On average, over two million tourists per year book flights to San Marino, a landlocked microstate on the northeastern side of Italy, near the Adriatic Sea. The fifth-smallest country in the world, San Marino is only 61 square kilometers with a population of roughly 33,500 people. Despite its size, San Marino is rich in history, as it is the world’s oldest constitutional republic, which is one of the many reasons why travelers book business-class flights to San Marino.
The story of the Most Serene Republic of San Marino dates back to 301 CE when the nation’s founder, Saint Marinus, settled his independently run community on Monte Titano (“Mount Titan”). After helping the neighboring city of Rimini rebuild its walls following an attack by pirates, Marinus and a group of Christians settled on the mountain to avoid persecution from the Romans. Because of its isolation, Marinus and his community were able to fortify their position and defend against any would-be attackers, which led to San Marino becoming one of the oldest sovereign states in the world. Over the years, the monastic community adopted a constitutional republic form of government, which it has maintained since 1600 CE.
Due to its size, tourists who wish to fly to San Marino have to book their flights to nearby airports in Italy. San Marino has no international airport of its own, which means many tourists intent on booking cheap tickets to San Marino often travel to the Rimini-Miramare Airport, which is the closest, and hop on trains and buses or hire taxis to take them into San Marino.
Though it has 9 towns, many who fly to San Marino spend most of their time in the capital city of San Marino, which goes by the same name. The city of San Marino is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and truly one of the hidden gems in both Italy and across Europe.
Much of San Marino feels like a world from another era. Since the city is built on a mountain, there are many steep staircases and passageways that travelers enjoy exploring on foot, and much of the city maintains a classic, medieval architecture that has stood for centuries. The old town of San Marino, in particular, is a maze of historic buildings, cafes, shops, and more.
Visitors who book flights to San Marino often make the city’s three towers their first stop. Two of the towers, Guaita Tower and Cesta Tower, are small castles at the top of Monte Titano, offering incredible views of San Marino and the Adriatic Sea. Both of these towers are open to the public, and within Cesta, visitors can explore a Museum of Archaic Arms that features armor and weapons from the Middle Ages up to the 1800s. Guaita Tower, however, was the first tower built in San Marino, and many explorers argue that it is the most picturesque and beautiful of the three.
The third tower, Montale Tower, can only be observed from the outside, as it is closed to tourists. However, it’s considered the most important tower of all because it sits on Montale Peak and offers a 360° view of San Marino, thus being able to detect any foreign invaders.
Another big draw for tourists is the Basilica di San Marino, which is the main church of San Marino. Over the years, this basilica has been rebuilt numerous times, and it is dedicated to Saint Marinus. Right next door to the Basilica di San Marino is Chiesa di San Pietro, a smaller church that contains stone beds that were believed to be used by Saint Marinus and other famous leaders.
For those looking to book cheap flights to San Marino and explore all of the city-state’s offerings, there is a tourist train that runs from San Marino to Borgo Maggiore, a neighboring community, and back. A one-way trip takes 40 minutes, and the train ride offers many sites to those looking to capture the beauty and history of San Marino.
Other sites for visitors include the Torture Museum, Museum of Curiosities, Vampire Museum, art and state museums, and a plethora of excellent restaurants and shops. For those who fly to San Marino, it truly is a getaway filled with food, fun, and adventure.
In terms of precipitation, rainfall in San Marino ranges from 15.8–249.3''/month. Dec is typically the wettest month, when rainfall can reach 249.3''. Jan is typically the driest time to visit San Marino when rainfall is around 15.8''.
Jun is the ideal time of year to visit, when temperatures reach an average of 76.1ºF. Travelers looking to avoid the cold should look outside of Dec, when temperatures are typically at their lowest (around 44.8ºF).
