Today, Constanta is home to about 265,000 people. It is home to the largest port in the Black Sea, making the city a major player in Eastern Europe’s economy. Because of its seaside location, Constanta is also a popular tourist destination during the summer months.

Flights to Constanta, Romania, arrive at Constanta Mihail Kogalniceanu International Airport (CND). The small airport is located about 16 miles north of the city. Direct flights to Constanta are available year-round from London and Istanbul. Service to the city expands during the summer months to include flights from Tel Aviv and a handful of cities in Turkey. Cheap flights to Constanta can be booked on the low-cost carrier Wizz Air, which operates flights to the city from the United Kingdom.

In addition to visiting the area’s beaches, tourists fly to Constanta, Romania, to see its many archeological sites, historic buildings and ruins, and monuments. More modern city attractions include open-air cafes and restaurants, museums, and shops.

Among Constanta’s most visited historic buildings are the Genoese Lighthouse, built in 1860; the shuttered Art Deco-style Constanta Casino, built in 1910; and the neo-Byzantine Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1883.

The Genoese Lighthouse is an interesting monument in Romania, as it honors the original lighthouse, which was built in the 14th century by Genoese traders who used the port to guide their ships.

Constanta is also home to an aquarium, several museums, and theaters. The city’s Natural Sciences Museum Complex includes a planetarium. The Archaeological Park, which sits near Constanta’s City Hall is an interesting location for tourists. More than just an open-air park, it features poetry, columns, and other artifacts that date as far back as the Roman-Byzantine occupation of Constanta. In another life, Constanta was known as Tomis (a name given by the Greeks), and this echo of Tomis is considered very much alive and well in Archaeological Park.

Some of the people who fly to Constanta are students who come to the city to enroll in one of its universities. The city is home to both the Mircea cel Batran Naval Academy and Constanta Maritime University, the only schools in the country to offer naval and maritime training and education programs.

Popular destination cities and locations in Romania include Bucharest, Constanta, and Craiova.
