Since the overthrow of Romania’s communist government in 1989, Brasov has been of increased interest to tourists. The city’s central location makes it an ideal base from which to explore much of the Transylvania region.

The airport, which opened in 2023, is the newest airport in Romania and the first to be built post-Communism. Tourists who fly to Brasov will find several historic sites in the city. Bran Castle is associated with the legend of Dracula, as the figure was based on Vlad the Impaler, who lived in Bran Castle. Today, visitors can tour Bran Castle and explore its nearly 650 years of history. The castle leans into the Dracula myth, creating tours that speak to the legends, history, and iconic architecture. Tourists can also reserve a table and eat at Bran Castle, which serves a “royal style” meal that encapsulates the heart and soul of the region.

The nearby Rucar-Bran Passage connects Bran Castle and Brasov with other Romanian villages. It’s a great spot for outdoor enthusiasts, as visitors can stop at its many hotels and restaurants, ride ATVs, and hike the Carpathian Mountain area.

The Libearty Bear Sanctuary is located near Brasov, and it offers visitors a chance to see brown bears in a more natural setting. Many of the bears in this sanctuary were rescued from captivity and now can live out their lives in a safe, natural area. From Brasov, the bear sanctuary is about a 35-40 minute cab ride, but for many visitors, the trek is worth it.

Annual events in Brasov that attract visitors from across the globe include the Brasov International Marathon and the BRD Brasov Challenger tennis tournament.

Among the people who fly to Brasov are students, as the city is home to nine universities. The city’s largest, the Transylvania University of Brasov, has an enrollment of more than 20,000 students. Other universities in Brasov include George Baritiu University; Sextil Puscariu University; and Spiru Haret University.
