Located in southern Poland, Krakow is one of the country’s largest cities. Krakow is also one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, dating back to the seventh century. The city is known throughout the world for its beautiful historic architecture, scenic streets and parks, and rich history and culture. Krakow is one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting more than 14 million visitors each year.

Public transportation is available from the airport to the city center via trains that arrive and depart from Krakow’s main train station. Krakow’s Wawel Royal Castle, which was built on the 200-plus meter-tall Wawel Hill and can be seen from most points in the city, is considered one of the country’s most significant historic sites. The castle, built in the 14th century, is part of a complex of buildings that were home to Poland’s royal family for hundreds of years. The tombs of several of Poland’s monarchs are located inside the 1,000-year-old Wawel Cathedral. Some of the oldest buildings at Wawel date back to the 10th century. Today, the Wawel Royal Castle and other structures in the complex are open to the public as a museum.

Among the most well-known are the Krakow Philharmonic, home to the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, an opera house built in the late 19th century in the gothic style that is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
