Flights to Utrecht, Netherlands, arrive at one of two nearby airports. Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport (AMS) is the closest airport to Utrecht. One of the world’s busiest airports, Schiphol Airport handles nearly 53 million passengers each year. It is a hub for the Dutch flag carrier, KLM airlines, which makes booking a direct flight to Utrecht possible year-round. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Utrecht’s central train station from Schiphol Airport.
Cheap flights to Utrecht operated by low-cost carriers such as Ryanair or Wizz Air often arrive at Eindhoven International Airport (EIN), located in the city of Eindhoven. The Netherlands’ second busiest airport, Eindhoven Airport handles about 7 million passengers each year. Passengers who fly to Utrecht via Eindhoven can travel to Utrecht via train in about an hour. It’s a great alternative, especially for those who want to visit both cities on their tour across all of the beautiful locales the Netherlands has to offer.
Many of the people who book tickets to Utrecht are connected in some way to the city’s educational institutions. Students, researchers, visiting professors, and scientists fly to Utrecht on a regular basis.
The University of Utrecht, the country’s largest and oldest university, founded in 1636, has an enrollment of about 30,000 students. The city is also home to one of the campuses of the TIAS School for Business and Society, the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, and the Utrecht School of the Arts.
Because of the number of students living in the city, Utrecht is known for its culture. Thousands of people fly to Utrecht to attend its festivals, visit its museums, and see its historic sites each year. The city is home to the Netherlands Film Festival and the International Early Music Festival. Its Central Museum has a vast collection of work from both Dutch and international artists.
For visitors who fly to Utrecht and want to explore, there are plenty of scenic buildings and cultural attractions to visit. The Dom Tower, originally completed in 1382, is part of St. Martin’s Cathedral, another historic attraction in the city. However, the nave connecting the two was never fully completed, and unfinished structures attached to the Dom Tower collapsed. Now a sole tower, it offers a beautiful view of Utrecht and acts as sort of a watchtower for the city. It’s also the largest church tower in the Netherlands and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
One of the beautiful draws to this city is the Utrecht Lumen. This series of light installations is artistically designed and makes a wonderful evening stroll even more magical. Visitors can plan a route around these light installations, starting at the Dom Tower.
For a day-trip outside of Utrecht, visitors can explore the Castle de Haar. This castle, one of the largest in the Netherlands, has a unique history. Originally built in 1391, it was partially destroyed in 1482 and rebuilt sometime in the 16th century. Having fallen into ruins and disrepair, the castle was restored and renovated in the late 19th century. Today, it’s a wonderful tourist attraction with parks and gardens worth exploring.
Notable people from Utrecht include writer and illustrator Dick Bruna, creator of the internationally beloved children’s book character, Miffy; Dutch modernist architect and furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld; and classical composer Louis Andriessen.
