Flights to Delft, Netherlands, arrive at one of two international airports. The closest airport to Delft is Rotterdam International Airport (RTM), which is located about 16 miles from the city center. Flights to Delft also arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport (AMS), about 27 miles from the city center. Train service is available from both airports to Delft’s main railway station as well as to Delft University of Technology’s Campus railway station.

Travelers looking to book cheap flights to Delft may find more flight options if they choose to arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport, as it is larger and busier than Rotterdam Airport.

Tourists who fly to Delft often make it a point to see some of the city’s historic buildings and sites. The city’s Old Church, which was built in the late 13th century, is the burial place of Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. Other popular sites include the city’s De Roos Windmill, built in the 18th century, and the Renaissance-style Delft City Hall, which is still home to the city’s government offices.

The tradition of making pottery in Delft dates back to the 17th century. Delft is today home to several pottery manufacturers including Royal Delft, which has been in business for more than 350 years. Visitors who book tickets to Delft often purchase pieces of pottery as souvenirs.

Outdoor enthusiasts who fly to Delft can hike or mountain bike in the Delft Woods, a large nature reserve just outside of the city. The Delft woods are also home to a large lake with public beaches and a botanical garden.

For tourists who purchase tickets to Delft, one of the most common stops is the Markt (or Market Square). This town center is home to statues, pubs, retail stores, and historic buildings such as the Renaissance Town Hall and the 16th-century New Church. If visitors are fortunate enough to stop by the Market Square on Thursdays, they’ll see a jam-packed maze of covered stalls selling fresh produce, cheeses, artisan crafts, baked goods, and other crafts from local vendors. It truly is a great way to get in touch with the culture and vibe of Delft.

For lovers of all things flora and fauna, the TU Botanical Garden, which is run by the university, offers medicinal gardens, arboretums, flower gardens, and a tropical greenhouse, all home to over 7,000 different species of plants. Best of all, admission is more than affordable, making it a great way to spend an afternoon in Delft.

For history buffs, the Museum Prinsenhof, formerly a palace converted from a medieval monastery, offers a collection of cultural artifacts and Dutch Golden Age paintings. It’s also the famous location of the assassination of William of Orange, a leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish, which resulted in the Eight Years’ War.

In addition to Vermeer, notable people from Delft include Suzanne Manet, wife of French modernist painter Edouard Manet; Martinus Beijerinck, the microbiologist who discovered viruses; and Olympic silver medal-winning swimmer, Thamar Henneken.
