Tourists book tickets to Kaunas to visit the city’s historic Old Town, which is home to the medieval Kaunas Castle, built in the 14th century; its 16th-century Town Hall; and the 19th-century Presidential Palace, which is today a museum. Tourists visiting the Old Town can take the Aleksotas Funicular to the top of Aleksotas Hill to enjoy a panoramic view of the Old Town and the Nemunas River.

Though the exact construction date of the Kaunas Castle is unknown, written notes from the leader of the Teutonic Order, planning a siege of the Kaunas Castle, can be traced back to at least 1376. Throughout the years, different armies occupied Kaunas Castle, and weather-related damages, such as flooding, besieged the structure. In the 1930s, efforts were made to start protecting and restoring Kaunas Castle. Today, it’s a museum and the host of several festivals each year, and its layout looks close to the original layout believed to have originally been built.

Kaunas is also home to several museums. Perhaps the most interesting is the Zmuidzinavicius Museum, or Devil Museum. It is home to a variety of art depicting devils from around the world, including carvings, sculptures, and paintings. The devils depicted include those found in ancient folklore as well as more modern incarnations represented by images of Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin.
