One of the more hidden gems in Europe, travelers who have taken flights to Kosovo swear by the country’s beautiful forests and mountains, citing the nation as a must for hikers and explorers in search of destinations off the beaten path. Located in the center of the Balkans, Kosovo is a newer nation, having declared its independence from Serbia as recently as 2008. Though some nations, like Serbia, do not recognize Kosovo’s independence, most members of the European Union and other nations around the globe acknowledge Kosovo as an independent country.
This contentious political landscape has generally discouraged tourism to the nation, but those who have booked flights to Kosovo tell a different story. Kosovo is just as much a travel destination as any other country in Europe, and it has much to offer to those in search of beauty, adventure, and culture.
All international travelers who purchase tickets to Kosovo arrive at a single destination, Priština International Airport Adem Jashari (PRN), which is named after the founder of the Kosovo Liberation Army and serves as the nation’s only port of entry to visitors. Priština International Airport Adem Jashari is located southwest of Priština, the capital and largest city in Kosovo.
Within the city of Priština, visitors who book plane tickets to Kosovo will find many cultural sites to explore. The Museum of Kosovo is Priština’s primary museum, featuring numerous attractions and serving as a cultural hub for the heritage and history of the Balkans. The Museum of Kosovo features many historical artifacts from the Bronze Age and the modern era. An annex of the Museum of Kosovo, the Ethnological Museum is located in an old housing complex dating back to the Ottoman Empire. This annex showcases cultural items and traditions of the Kosovar people, offering visitors a unique perspective and view of the heritage of Kosovo. Also part of the Museum of Kosovo is the Archaeological Park, which is an outdoor exhibit that showcases gravestones, statues, monuments, and mythological and architectural fragments of the former Kingdom of Dardania, which ruled the region in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE.
Also located in Priština is the Mother Teresa Cathedral, a new cathedral built in the new-renaissance Italian style. It features beautiful construction and towers that add stand out in the city’s skyline, and it’s unofficially named after the famous Albanian nun. Nearby, there’s also a statue of Mother Teresa in the Priština city center.
Just 5 kilometers outside of Priština, visitors who fly to Kosovo will find the Kosovo field, a famed battle site between the Balkan Alliance and the armies of the Ottoman Empire. Located within the field is the Gračanica Monastery, a Serbian Orthodox monastery built by Serbian king Stefan Milutin in 1321. Gračanica Monastery is considered a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Adventurers who book cheap flights to Kosovo will find plenty of natural environments to explore. The Gadime Cave (Marble Cave) is a top attraction. This marble limestone cave is believed to be at least 2.6 million years old, and though much of its winding channels and passages are still unexplored, tourists can go on 1-2 hour hikes.
For those looking for a relaxing getaway, Batlava Lake offers an incredible view, wonderful food, and several resorts for travelers to unwind. Originally created as a man-made water source for Priština and other regions, this lake near the village of Orllan offers fishing, swimming, boating, 5-star restaurants, plenty of views, and friendly faces. Many travelers who have booked plane tickets to Kosovo recommend Batlava Lake as an ideal ambiance for tourists looking to get away from it all.
Explorers in search of the remote (and who don’t mind taking a bus or taxi) can venture out to the village of Mramor and explore the Bear Sanctuary. The European brown bears in this enclosure were rescued from captivity and spend their days enjoying life in the forest, where all their needs are cared for.
Southwest of Priština is Prizren, the second-most-populous city in Kosovo. On a hill overlooking the Prizren River is the Prizren Fortress, an ancient fortification site that dates back to the Bronze Age. Though many different rulers have controlled it over the centuries, it’s now a popular tourist destination that features many ramparts, corridors, inner rooms, and towers. For those who have booked flights to Kosovo and explored the country, Prizren Fortress endures as a top archaeological site to visit, and it’s just one of the many reasons to venture into the beauty and cultural offerings of Kosovo.
