The large airport serves nearly 10 million passengers each year and handles flights to and from several cities in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Many of the travelers who fly to Parma enjoy sampling the city’s traditional foods, including authentic Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and Prosciutto di Parma or Parma ham, a type of cured ham usually served in thin slices.
For visitors who want to submerge themselves into the culture and history of Parma, the Palazzo della Pilotta is a great place to start. This complex of buildings was originally constructed in the mid-to-late 16th century as a connection between the Ducal Palace and the nearby keep. Though it has changed hands and purposes over the years, today it’s the home of several museums and cultural centers in Parma. The National Archaeological Museum of Parma finds its home here, as does the National Art Gallery and a museum dedicated to Giambattista Bodoni, a historical printer, publisher, and typographer in Parma known for creating letterforms and stylized typefaces.
The Teatro Farnese, a Baroque theater from the early 17th century, is also part of the Palazzo della Pilotta. This theater is one of only three remaining Baroque theaters in Europe. For those who visit Parma, the Teatro Farnese still has regular events and exhibitions, should visitors be lucky enough to catch one. Its architecture and grand design are enviable, and visiting it, whether a theater fan or not, is an experience in itself.
The city is also home to the University of Parma. One of the world’s oldest universities, the University of Parma was founded in the 15th century and today has an enrollment of 26,000 students. Many of the university’s students come from other cities in Italy, but a fair number of them fly to Parma from other countries.
Throughout its long history, Parma has been home to a number of prominent residents, especially fine artists, writers, and classical musicians. Notable people with ties to Parma include Renaissance painter Antonio da Correggio; classical composer and musician Niccolo Paganini; classical composer and musician Arturo Toscanini; and classical and opera composer Giuseppe Verdi.
