Historically, Santorini was the site of a massive volcanic eruption in 1600 BCE. This eruption rained ash down on the classical Minoan civilization, leaving behind a collapse imprint after the explosion. Known as a “caldera” this large depression has become a must-see sight for tourists who fly to Santorini today.

For visitors interested in the history of this series of islands, a stop at the Prehistoric Thira Museum in the capital city of Fira is a must. Its collection includes artifacts from prehistoric and late Neolithic eras, as well as geological research and findings about the Santorini area. From fossils and bugs to ceramics and marble works, the Prehistoric Thira Museum offers much in the way of learning about the area.

After a stop at the museum, Fira is a sight worth exploring. Its white-washed walls and blue-domed tops are awe-worthy. Visitors who book flights to Santorini come to Fira to casually walk the streets, explore the shops, and taste the local flavor in everything from wine to delectable Mediterranean dishes. Coming to Fira is also a great first start for tourists, as it has its own international airport nearby.

Many flights to Santorini, Greece, pass through the International Airport of Thira (JTR). In the warmer months, this airport is heavily trafficked with tourists and vacationers, and direct flights might be hard to come by. As a backup, visitors can book tickets to nearby Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (AIA) and hop on a quick domestic flight to Thira’s airport from there.

Other sites on Santorini include the Akrotiri archaeological site. This ancient Bronze Age settlement was covered in ash from a volcanic eruption and later excavated. Visitors can take self-guided tours on walkways to see preserved buildings of the Minoan era. Considered one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Greece, tourists can walk through the ruins of buildings and get up close to the architecture of this ancient civilization. Many of the artifacts, however, have been removed and are on display at the Prehistoric Thira Museum.

Nearby, the Akrotiri Lighthouse offers a completely different perspective. This lighthouse was designed by the French in the late 19th century and was in frequent use up until the Second World War. Today, visitors stop by the cliffside where the lighthouse stands, catching a sunset unlike any other. Other breathtaking views include one of the best spots to take in the Santorini Volcano.

For experienced hikers who book flights to Santorini, the Amoudi Bay is a traverse back in time. This small port is below a rocky cliffside that travelers can hike down. Though a bay with gorgeous sights, it has no beaches or room for sunbathing. Visitors tend to walk the streets of this little port and swim in the blue waters. It’s a popular spot for cliff jumpers, as well as a prime location for tourists who enjoy eating grilled octopus.
