One of the city’s main industries is heavy manufacturing, with plants that produce materials such as cement, industrial machinery, bicycles, and paper. Patras is also home to sizable information technology and finance sectors. Many of Greece’s financial institutions have their main offices in the city.

Students are also among the travelers who fly to Patras on a regular basis. The city is home to three universities. A large percentage of the city’s population is made up of students.

Because the Patras is in the Panachaikon Mountain Range, it is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The mountains are home to several hiking trails and two hikers’ shelters. Located at the highest point in Patras, the Castle of Patra is a medieval relic that dates back to the 6th century. It was constructed by the Byzantine emperor Justinian, but over the centuries, it has been captured and ruled by the Franks and Turks, who ultimately lost it to the French. It was in the early 19th century when the French, who conquered the castle from the Turks, turned it over to the people of Greece.

Over 1,300 exhibits fill its halls, focusing on public and private life. Visitors can expect to see ancient mosaics, Greek sculptures, a stone statue of Athena, and other wonders, burial offerings, and ancient weaponry. There are also prominent exhibits about ancient burial beliefs and views on death. This, too, dates back to prehistoric times, showcasing how various cultures’ influences transformed how we honor and celebrate those who have passed on before us.

Notable people from Patras include Olympic gold medal-winner gymnast Nikolaos Andriakopoulos; fashion designer Nikos Apostolopoulos; and Greek impressionist painter Epameinondas Thomopoulos.
