Kavala’s largest festival is the two-month-long Festival of Philippi, which is held during July and August. The event includes a number of theatrical and dance performances and live concerts. Considered one of the most important cultural events in Greece, it is the country’s second oldest festival dating back to 1957. Thousands of people fly to Kavala each summer to experience this festival.

Other festivals that travelers book flights to Kavala, Greece, to attend include the Kavala Air and Sea Show, a free air show held in June; the Cosmopolis festival, which is held in the city’s Old Town and celebrates cultures from around the world with music, food, films, and dance; and the Yiannis Papaioannou Festival, a classical music festival that includes concerts and lectures honoring the Greek composer.

Flights to Kavala arrive at Kavala Alexander the Great International Airport (KVA), located about 17 miles from the city. The airport handles about 260,000 passengers each year. Direct flight tickets to Kavala are available from cities across Europe during the busy summer tourist season. Cheap flights to Kavala are easier to find during the off-season fall and winter months.

At the top of the peninsula stands the Acropolis of Kavala. Though the ancient acropolis, which was built by the Byzantines, no longer stands, in its place is the Fortress of Kavala. This fortification towers over the city, offering plenty of incredible views of the area all the way around. Today, visitors can tour the fortress, taking in sights like the old arsenal, a circular tower, and more.

Around the fortress is the Panagia Quarter, also known as “old town.” This area features older architecture and more of a look into the look of Kavala of yesteryear. Visitors can explore its streets and stop for a bite to eat.

Many visitors who fly to Kavala stop for a little rest and relaxation at the mud baths. The Krinides Mud Baths have been a place of therapeutic rejuvenation for thousands of years. Today, visitors can experience this ancient practice in a modern facility.

Near the mud baths is the Archaeological Site of Philippi. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features the remains of the ancient city of Philippi. It was taken over by the Romans, and today, visitors can see remnants of the forum, theater, and other archaeological wonders.

It may sound like a strange destination to stop at, but the Municipal Tobacco Warehouse is an interesting site in Kavala. Built in 1910, this structure has an Ottoman-inspired design and is a look into Kavala’s tobacco mercantile past. In fact, the area around it features numerous statues and monuments to tobacco workers, and the space itself houses many exhibits that often change seasonally.

Notable people with ties to Kavala include novelist Vassilis Vassilikos; contemporary classical composer Yiannis Papaioannou; and film and stage actress Antigone Valakou.
