Many of the people who book flights to Ioannina, Greece, are business travelers who work in the city’s burgeoning technology sector or for the University of Ioannina. The city has also long been a center for handcrafted metalwork, with craftspeople producing silver and bronze decorative and household items.
Flights to Ioannina arrive at Ioannina National Airport (IOA). The small domestic airport, located in Ioannina, serves about 135,000 passengers each year. Direct and business class flights to Ioannina are available year-round. Flights to Ioannina National Airport from other cities operate mostly on a seasonal basis during the warmer summer months. Travelers who are looking for cheap flights to Ioannina may find better deals on airfare if they are able to fly during the fall or winter.
Most travelers who fly to Ioannina visit Ioannina Castle, a historic landmark and unofficial symbol of the city. Located in the city’s Old Town, the stone castle was built in the 11th century and is still largely intact today. The castle complex is home to several museums and a library, as well as examples of Ottoman and ancient Greek ruins. It’s a highlight for many tourists looking to explore the ancient world on a trip through Greece.
Within the Ioannina Castle grounds, there’s the Silversmithing Museum. This museum explores the history and technique behind forging silver. Along with seeing tools of the trade, visitors can see unique creations throughout history, particularly those that embody the style and culture of the region. For many tourists, a visit to the Silversmithing Museum results in wonder at some of the gorgeous items on display.
Also near the castle is the tomb of Ali Pasha, a despotic Ottoman ruler who lorded over the region and committed many terrible acts. Visitors can see two graves at Ali Pasha’s tomb, one belonging to Pasha and the other to one of his wives. History remembers this figure due to his often cruel nature, as well as the assassination organized by the Sultan that ended his long reign.
Another popular destination in the city is the Island of Ioannina, which is situated within Lake Pamvotis. Accessible by ferry boat, the island is home to six historic monasteries. The oldest is the Monastery of Saint Nicolas, built in the 11th century, while the most recent is the Monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ, built in the 19th century. The island is also home to several small shops, cafes, and restaurants that are popular with both tourists and locals.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the Perama Cave system is a short bus trip outside of Ioannina, but it offers visitors a descent into a “fairytale-like” system that’s the second-largest in Greece. While tourists can’t self-tour, there are plenty of guided tours that take travelers through a surprisingly stunning series of caves.
In terms of precipitation, rainfall in Ioannina ranges from 0.0–193.5''/month. Nov is typically the wettest month, when rainfall can reach 193.5''. Jul is typically the driest time to visit Ioannina when rainfall is around 0.0''.
Jul is the ideal time of year to visit, when temperatures reach an average of 82.6ºF. Travelers looking to avoid the cold should look outside of Feb, when temperatures are typically at their lowest (around 53.4ºF).
