Flights to Regensburg, Germany, arrive at Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport International Airport (MUC), which serves much of northern Bavaria. The airport is the second-largest in Germany, with more than 31 million passengers passing through it each year. Other significant sites in Regensburg include the 12th century Stone Bridge, which spans the Danube River; the Botanischer Garten der Universität Regensburg, a botanical garden located on the campus of the University of Regensburg; and the Schloss Thurn und Taxis castle, formerly home to Saint Emmeram’s Abbey, a Benedictine Monastery built in the 8th century.

The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte (House of Bavarian History) is also located in Regensburg. This relatively recent museum celebrates the more current history of the region, focusing on Bavarian culture and the common threads that celebrate Bavarian’s role as a “free state” within the Federal Republic of Germany.

Just east of Regensburg is the Walhalla, a “hall of fame” that celebrates famous figures in German history. Named for a character in Norse mythology, Walhalla takes design cues from the Parthenon in Greece. It was originally built in the early-to-mid 19th century.

Among the notable people from Regensburg are Ludwig Bemelmans, an author and illustrator of children’s books including the beloved Madeline series; Oskar Schindler, a German businessman and humanitarian known for saving the lives of more than 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust; and Pope Benedict XVI, former professor of theology at the University of Regensburg.
