Flights to Munster, Germany, arrive at Munster Osnabruck International Airport (FMO). The airport, located about 16 miles north of Munster, serves the entire Westphalia region. About 830,000 passengers pass through the airport each year. Students and travelers on a budget can book cheap flights to Munster on the low-cost carrier Ryanair.

Because of its long history, Munster is home to a number of historic buildings and sites. Most visitors who fly to Munster make a point of seeing at least a few of these places. Built in the 13th century, the Romanesque-style Saint Paul’s Cathedral is home to an astronomical clock. The clock, which displays the movements of the planets, was built in the 16th century. Other popular attractions include the Munster Botanical Garden, founded in 1803; the Westphalian Museum for Natural History; and the historic city center and shopping area, Prinzipalmarkt, which is home to several shops, restaurants, and cafes.

For tourists looking to step back in time, the Freilichtmuseum Mȕhlenhof (open-air museum) shows a more agrarian lens of Germany in the 1800s. This museum, located near Lake Aasee, features over 30 historical buildings, from a post mill to a historical classroom setting in a close assemblage of a historic German village. Visitors can learn about classic craft life, and during the Christmas season, a special market is set up that brings traditional favorites to the forefront.

Nearby Lake Aasee is a great outdoor location for relaxation. Visitors can rent boats, view some of the animals located on-site, and see why this lake was voted one of the most beautiful parks in all of Europe.

For history buffs who fly into Munster, the historic city hall is the location where the “Peace of Westphalia” was signed, bringing an end to the Thirty Years’ War. For a small admission charge, visitors can view this Gothic-style building, known as the “Hall of Peace,” and take in some of the artifacts on display.

Students fly to Munster to study at the University of Munster, one of Germany’s oldest universities. Founded in the late 18th century, the University of Munster has an enrollment of 43,000. The city is also home to the Munster University of Applied Sciences, a technical university offering several engineering programs as well as programs in business, medicine, and physics.

Notable people from Munster include professional cyclist Linus Gerdemann; soprano opera singer Esther Dierkes; and Father Clemens August Graf von Galen, a Roman Catholic cardinal who led public protests against the Nazis’ killing of more than 70,000 mentally ill, handicapped, elderly, and chronically ill people, a number which included thousands of children. He was made a saint after his death by Pope Benedict XVI.

Popular destination cities in Germany include Berlin, Bonn, Bremen, Cologne, Dortmund, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Leipzig, Munich, Munster, Nuremberg, and Stuttgart.
