Travelers who fly to Kassel arrive at Kassel Airport (KSF), a small international airport located in the city. Kassel Airport serves about 117,000 passengers each year. Ground transportation from the airport is available via one of Kassel’s seven public tram lines.

Cheap flights to Kassel can sometimes be booked off-season during the fall and winter as most tourists book tickets to Kassel during the warmer spring and summer months.

Flights to Kassel, Germany, are often booked by tourists who come to the city to see the Bergpark Wilhelmshohe, a large hilltop park that dates back to the 17th century. It’s one of the largest hilltop parks of its kind in both Germany and Europe. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the baroque-style Kassel Hercules, a massive stone monument that features several gardens, fountains, and other water features. Inside the monument, visitors will find a copper statue of Hercule that stands nearly 28 feet tall.

Also in the Bergpark Wilhelmshohe stands the Löwenburg Castle (or “Lions Castle” in English). Though this structure looks historic, it’s also a reproduction meant to capture the feel of a classic castle from the 16th century. It was built by Landgrave William IX as a monument to his family’s development and lordship over Kassel in the early 19th century. Beneath the castle’s chapel, William is entombed in a crypt. Today, tourists who fly to Kassel can explore this structure and see the extensive lengths its original owner went to in order to capture the feel of a true medieval castle.

Another popular attraction in Kassel is the city’s contemporary and modern art exhibition, Documenta, which began in 1955 and is now held every five years. The exhibition, which includes work by artists from around the world, is considered to be one of the contemporary art world’s top events. Art work from past Documenta exhibitions can be seen throughout the city.

Tourists who fly to Kassel will find several other attractions there worth seeing. These include the Brothers Grimm Museum, dedicated to the creators of the famous fairy tales; the Museum of Natural History; and the Museum of Physics and Astronomy.

The Brothers Grimm Museum is particularly illuminating, as it details the lives of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and how these expert linguists not only collected fairy tales but also helped curate and move the needle on German cultural studies.

Near the city center of Kassel stands the Fridericianum. While today it’s a popular art venue and host for the Documenta exhibition, this building is one of the oldest public museums in all of Europe. It was originally opened in the late 18th century and intended as both a library and a museum meant to enrich and educate the people of Kassel. In recent times, it has oscillated between its original use and new purpose, featuring exhibits that bounce between historical artifacts and modern artwork.

Notable people with ties to Kassel include classical composer and violinist Louis Spohr; Paul Reuter, a journalist and the founder of the Reuters news agency; and artist Hugo Wilhelm Arthur Nahl who designed the state seal of California.
