Flights to Heidelberg, Germany, land in Frankfurt at the Frankfurt Airport (FRA). This airport handles plenty of international traffic, and is a gateway to the surrounding area. From Frankfurt, the most efficient way to travel to Heidelberg is by train, of which there are plenty that leave directly from the airport. Most train rides take just under an hour, allowing tourists and students to take in the view and scenery. Buses are also available, though they take longer.

Because a big part of its city is the university, there are plenty of cheap flights to Heidelberg available on discount carriers like Ryanair and Easy Jet.

For tourists who fly to Heidelberg, one of the most important stops is the Heidelberg Castle. This German ruin, originally built in the 13th century, is a beautiful fortification and palatial residence that even Victor Hugo has visited and written about. Today, Heidelberg Castle still looms large over the city, and residents and tourists can explore it for a nominal fee. Tourists can expect to see lush, gorgeous gardens, a beautiful courtyard, and key features of the Heidelberg Castle grounds. There are guided tours available, as well as an apothecary museum, which showcases the history of medicines and pharmaceuticals in Germany.

Within the city, the Heidelberger Marktplatz has been around nearly as long as the city itself. It’s the center square, full of food and artisan vendors, and has been an open-air marketplace since the Middle Ages. These days, it’s foot-traffic only, which keeps the Heidelberger Marktplatz cleaner and more relaxed for locals and tourists alike.

Not too far away, near the main university campus, is the Studentkarzer (“student prison”), which was in operation until the early 20th century. Students were locked up here for carousing around at night and other public offenses, and they would often scribble or draw on the walls, which are painstakingly restored and preserved today. Visitors can see the student prison for themselves and wonder what it must have been like to spend a night in a cell.

The “Old Bridge” in Heidelberg, which crosses over the Neckar River, is an arched bridge that connects both parts of the city. Having been built only within the last 300 years, it’s relatively new compared to much of Heidelberg. Still, for visitors who book flights to Heidelberg, it offers breathtaking views of the city, castle, and surrounding natural elements. It’s a great photo opportunity for travelers eager to capture the perfect social media post.

For tourists looking for a bit of traditional foods in Germany, Vetter’s Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus is a classic German beer hall that pairs beer with sausages, pretzels, and other favorites from around the country. Other local favorites include Weinstube Schnitzelbank and more.

Rock singer Jackson Browne, who famously wrote “Running on Empty,” and actors Richard Sammel and Michael Fassbender are some of the notable people born in Heidelberg, Germany.
