The closest airport to Rouen is Paris Beauvais International Airport (BVA) located in the city of Beauvais, about 50 miles east of Rouen. Paris Beauvais International Airport handles about 4.6 million passengers each year. It is a hub for the low-cost airline Ryanair and also handles flights from other budget carriers such as easyJet, Wizz Air, and HiSky. Passengers looking for cheap flights to Rouen often use this airport.

Travelers who want more options for flights to Rouen should consider flying to either Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG) or to Paris Orly International Airport (ORY). Both airports are located in Paris’ greater metro area, about 85 miles southwest of Rouen. Ground transport to Rouen from either airport takes about 2.5 hours by train.

The destinations most often visited by tourists who fly to Rouen include the Gothic Rouen Cathedral, built in the 16th century; the Gros-Horloge astronomical clock, a technological wonder built in the 14th century; and the medieval Rouen Castle, famous for being one of the locations where Saint Joan of Arc was brought and imprisoned. The Modern Church of Saint Joan of Arc was built in 1979 on the spot in Rouen’s Market Square where the saint was burned at the stake for heresy.

Rouen is also home to several art museums and a popular botanical garden, Jardin des Plantes de Rouen, which is open to the public free of admission.

Rue du Gros Horloge, which translates to “Street of the Big Clock,” is one of the main walkways in Rouen. Although one of the main attractions is the astronomical clock, there are plenty of stores, cafes, and beautiful architecture for visitors to experience. Since it’s Rouen’s main thoroughfare, it’s often busy. This street also bears the honor of being the first location of Monoprix, a famous department store that’s known throughout France.

Near Saint-Maclou church is the Aître Saint-Maclou, an ossuary with a dark history. This site was origiinally home to plague victims and unsettling and macabre carvings. It has since been renovated and has an added art gallery and cafe. For visitors who fly to Rouen, this is quickly becoming one of the more popular tourist destination, as if offers a glimpse into an often frightening part of European history.

Among those who fly to Rouen regularly are students who attend one of the city’s three universities. The largest of these, the University of Rouen Normandy, has an enrollment of nearly 30,000 students.

Notable Rouen residents include King Edward IV of England; the 17th-century explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, known for his exploration of North America’s Great Lakes region; 19th-century French novelist Gustave Flaubert; François Hollande, who served as the president of France from 2012 to 2017; and Formula One race car driver Pierre Gasly.
