The capital of the small Eastern European nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo is located on the Miljacka River. Perhaps best-known historically for being the place where the First World War began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on the Latin Bridge, in 1914, Sarajevo is today a modern cultural, financial, and political hub that is home to nearly 300,000 people. Beyond its historical significance, it is fast becoming a hub for tourism and exploration as travelers from around the world come to visit Sarajevo’s many sites.

Flights to Sarajevo arrive at Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ), which is located about four miles south of the city. The airport serves about 1.4 million passengers each year, more than half of which are tourists. Visitors book flights to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, year-round, drawn by recreation opportunities in the surrounding mountains as well as the city’s cultural and religious attractions. More than 700,000 tourists fly to Sarajevo each year.

Direct flights to Sarajevo are available from many of the larger cities in Europe and North America.

Among Sarajevo’s most popular sites include the Museum of Sarajevo; the Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina; the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina; the Sarajevo Cathedral; the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina; and the Mount Trebevic Cable Cars, which connect the city’s Old Town with the nearby mountain. For fans of art, the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina includes over 6,000 works. Tourists could easily spend a day at the National Gallery or many other culturally rich sites in Sarajevo.

Visitors also fly to Sarajevo to attend the city’s annual festivals, of which there are several. Perhaps the most well-known is the Sarajevo Film Festival, which is the largest film festival in southeast Europe. The MESS International Festival, an experimental theater festival; the Sarajevo Winter Festival; the Sarajevo International Music Festival; and Jazz Fest Sarajevo are also very popular and well attended. Whether tourists want to catch a movie or feel the beat, Sarajevo’s festival scene clearly has much to offer.

Sarajevo has a long history of education. The city’s first university, the University of Sarajevo, can trace its roots back to the early 16th century. Today, students from throughout Eastern Europe take cheap flights to Sarajevo in order to study there. The University of Sarajevo has an enrollment of more than 30,000 students. The city is also home to other universities, including Sarajevo School of Science and Technology; the International University of Sarajevo; the American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina; the Sarajevo Graduate School of Business; and the International Burch University. For students who love to travel, flying to Sarajevo can provide an educational and culturally rich experience.

Because Sarajevo has an ethnically diverse population made up of ethnic Bosnians, Muslims, Orthodox Christians, and Jews, the city’s traditional foods vary widely and are often sought after by visitors. Among Sarajevo’s most popular traditional foods are burek, a type of flaky pastry stuffed with meat or vegetables, and cevapi, a flat bread stuffed with sausages, both of which can be found throughout the city in restaurants, cafes, and on street carts. These dishes provide a culinary experience worth the ticket price to Sarajevo.

Sarajevo is also known for its beer scene. Many of the visitors who fly to Sarajevo take advantage of opportunities to take tours of the city’s active and lively breweries. One of Sarajevo’s oldest breweries, Sarajevska Pivara, opened in 1881 and continues to make the Pilsner-style lager for which the city is famous. The brewery offers tours and operates a museum detailing the company’s history, as well as provides plenty of beverages to thirsty travelers.

Popular destination cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina include Sarajevo and Mostar.
