Travelers who book flights to Bruges, Belgium, can choose to arrive at either Brussels Airport (BRU), which is an hour away from the city by car, or Ostend Bruges International Airport (OST), located about three miles from Bruges’ city center. While farther away from Bruges, Brussels Airport is larger and busier and often has more flights available. For those who want to fly to Bruges directly, Ostend Bruges International Airport might be a better choice.
Bruges is known for its medieval architecture, much of which is still intact. Its historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the city’s main tourist attractions. It is home to several medieval buildings including the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady, built in the 13th century. The iconic Belfry of Bruges, also located in the historic center, is a 13th-century medieval bell tower that has become the unofficial symbol of the city.
In addition to visiting the city center, many people book tickets to Bruges attend one of the city’s many music and cultural festivals. These include the Blues in Bruges blues festival; the Airbag accordion festival; the Cinema Novo film festival; and the Ice Magic ice sculpture festival. All year long, there is always something exciting happening in Bruges.
The city is also home to several museums. Several of these are art museums, such as the Groeningemuseum, which is located on the site of a former monastery. Some of the city’s less well-known museums include its Brewery Museum and the Frietmuseum, which is dedicated to Belgium’s famous French fries. Hungry “potato heads” may want to fly to Bruges for the Frietmuseum alone.
Cycling is a popular sport in Bruges. Both visitors who fly to Bruges and city residents often use bicycles to get around the city. It is not uncommon in Bruges to see more bicycles than cars when out walking around. Bruges has also hosted the annual Tour of Flanders bicycle race on two occasions, in 1998 and 2016. The Tour of Flanders is the largest road-cycling race in Belgium, and around the world, it is known as one of the “five monuments of cycling,” meaning that it’s one of the oldest, hardest, and most prestigious cycling events.
Burges is also an important center for higher education in Belgium and in Europe. Students from other parts of the country and from abroad often take cheap flights to Bruges to study there. Among the city’s universities is the College of Europe, which offers postgraduate degrees in law, economics, and political studies; the VIVES University of Applied Sciences; and the United Nations University Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS).
Notable people who were born or lived in Bruges include the 14th-century Flemish Northern Renaissance painter Jan van Eyck; 16th-century engineer and mathematician Simon Stevin; and contemporary jazz pianist Kris Defoort. For tourists who book flights to Bruges, there are plenty of opportunities for exploration and events to participate in. It truly is a world-class European city bustling with excitement.
