Flights to Tirana, Albania, arrive at Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza (TIA). The airport, named for the Albanian saint, Mother Teresa, is one of two international airports in the country. It is located just seven miles north of the city, making ground transport for people who take flights to Tirana viable by car, bus, or rail.

Direct flights to Tirana are available from several cities in Europe and the Middle East including Istanbul, London, Vienna, Tel Aviv, Rome, Frankfurt, and Warsaw. Flights from select North American cities such as New York (JFK) to Tirana are also available.

Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza is a hub for Air Albania, Albawings, and Wizz Air. Cheap flights to Tirana can be booked on low-cost carriers Ryanair, easyJet, Eurowings, and Pegasus Airlines.

Travelers who fly to Tirana are often impressed by the city’s wide variety of historic architecture, some of which dates back as far as the 6th century CE. More recent buildings in the city include structures created by the fascists in World War II, most notably the regime of Italy’s Benito Mussolini, which invaded and occupied Albania in 1939. Buildings constructed by the country’s Soviet-era government, the regime of communist dictator Enver Hoxha, are plentiful as well. For visitors interested in history, this unique assortment of architecture on display provides unique glimpses into the past, both antiquated and more recent.

The center of Tirana is known as Skanderbeg Square, named after an Albanian hero who fought off the Ottomans. Many of the buildings already mentioned, plus cultural institutions like the National Opera House can be found here. The National History Museum is also located around Skanderbeg Square, and it’s a great first stop for tourists looking to enrich themselves in Albanian history. The museum is divided by area, offering artifacts from the Paleolithic era, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and rule under the Mussolini Regime as well as the Soviets. Murals and mosaics evoke the Albanian spirit as visitors explore this museum.

For tourists who fly to Tirana, just off the square is Bunk'Art 2. This former nuclear bunker was transformed into a museum that houses artifacts from the communist regime, as well as art that showcases the Albanian spirit of rebellion. Though much of it has been transformed and maintained inside, the entrance to the Bunk’Art 2 is damaged. It has purposefully been left damaged, as this assault embodies the rejection of years of oppression under the communists.

Built during the late 18th century, the Ethem Bey Mosque is a beautiful building that was closed under communist rule, eventually restored, and finally reopened in the early 1990s for worship. Though it's an active mosque, tourists can still take guided tours when prayer service is not in session.

Today, Tirana is a modern city with large green spaces and parks, coffee houses and cafes, a botanical garden and zoo, and world-class art museums. Both locals and travelers who fly to Tirana enjoy the city’s contemporary architecture, including the Archaea Tower, a double skyscraper that was completed in 2021.
