In addition to its Old Town, tourist attractions in and near the city include the Phuket Big Buddha, an 84-foot-tall statue made of concrete that overlooks Ao Chalong Bay, and the Aquaria Phuket aquarium. The Thai Hua Museum, located right in the middle of Phuket’s Old Town, is another popular spot with tourists. Housed in an old Sino-Portuguese building constructed in 1934, this mansion-turned-museum catalogs the history, practices, and cultural traditions of Chinese immigrants to Thailand. The building itself, historically, was the largest Chinese language school in Thailand. Though no longer used for that purpose, today it offers a look into the past and an exploration of Chinese immigrants.
For many visitors who book flights to Phuket, no visit would be complete without a stop at the Wat Chalong Temple. This Buddhist temple is the largest and most popular of its kind in Thailand. There are several buildings located on the Wat Chalong grounds, all of which are beautifully constructed and decorated with ornate symbols and items expressing reverence for the Buddha. Some of the visitors who stop at Wat Chalong Temple come to pay respects to the monks who founded the temple. These revered figureheads not only played a part in the development of Wat Chalong, they also were known for healing sick community members and fighting against the Chinese rebellion in the late 1800s.
Many of the tourists who book flights to Phuket, Thailand, spend time at the island’s resorts. Travelers fly to Phuket year-round to visit its beaches, which are known for their white sand, tropical atmosphere, and lively nightlife. Patong Beach is one of the most popular and noteworthy of the beaches, nestled along the west side of Phuket Island. It’s an extensive stretch of sand and a popular resort area where visitors take in the sun, enjoy the waves and cool breeze, and celebrate the sometimes raucous nightlife. Beyond partying, Patong Beach is also a popular spot for wind-sailing, boat riding, and other watersporting activities. When visitors need a break from the sun, there are plenty of nearby restaurants and shops to catch some shade.
Phuket also hosts several annual festivals popular with visitors. These include the Phuket King's Cup Regatta yacht race; the Phuket Travel Fair; the Laguna Phuket Triathlon; and Phuket Bike Week.
Flights to Phuket, Thailand, arrive at Phuket International Airport (HKT), located about 30 miles north of Phuket city. Because the island is a major tourist destination, the airport is the third-largest in the country, serving nearly 14 million passengers each year. Both business class flights to Phuket and cheap flights to Phuket can be booked to arrive at this airport, which handles flights from more than 70 airlines originating in cities around the world. According to some sources, more than 9 million tourists fly to Phuket annually.
Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, is home to a mountainous region in the north and to Sirinat National Park, which includes breeding and nesting sites for endangered sea turtles. It’s also a great spot for hiking and taking in the beautiful, lush nature. Located right near the airport, Sirinat National Park is popular with tourists, offering both beachfront and shade in the pine trees that jut up against the beach.
Phuket island is connected to mainland Thailand by a bridge. Visitors who fly to Phuket and don’t want to rent a car while on the island can use its rapid transit and ferry systems to travel to various locations.
