Located on the Island of Cebu in the Visayas region of the Philippines, the City of Cebu has a history that dates back to the Spanish Colonial era in the 16th century. Today, the City of Cebu is a bustling, modern metropolis with a population of nearly 965,000 people. The city serves as the Philippines’ main port. The shipping industry makes up a large part of the City of Cebu’s economy.

Business class flights to Cebu arrive at Mactan Cebu International Airport (CEB), located in the suburb of Lapu-Lapu on the island of Mactan, which is connected to the main island of Cebu by three bridges: the Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway Bridge; the Mactan Mandaue Bridge; and the Marcelo Fernan Bridge. The Mactan Cebu International Airport is the second-busiest airport in the country by passenger and cargo traffic.

Direct international flights to Cebu are available from several countries in Asia, including Japan, Taiwan, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Malaysia. The Mactan Cebu International Airport serves as the hub for Cebu Pacific Airlines; Pan Pacific Airlines; Royal Air Philippines; and Philippine Airlines.

Tourists from the United States, Canada, and countries in Europe often book flights to the City of Cebu in order to vacation at one of the many tropical beach resorts located near the city. Travelers with flights that originate in North America often fly to the city from the West Coast of the United States, most often from Los Angeles (LAX) to Cebu or San Francisco (SFO) to Cebu.

While visiting the greater Cebu area, many travelers take advantage of the shopping opportunities the city offers. The City of Cebu is home to several shopping malls and is considered to be one of the Philippines’ best shopping destinations. One of the area’s largest shopping malls, Ayala Center Cebu, accommodates nearly 90,000 shoppers every day with that number increasing on weekends and during the December holiday season.

More traditional shopping opportunities are available to visitors at the city’s Carbon Market, an open-air marketplace. Carbon Market is the city’s oldest and largest outdoor retail venue with vendors selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to clothing, household goods, handmade craft items, books, toys, and kitchenware.

The City of Cebu is also one of the Philippines’ most important cultural hubs. The city’s historic buildings attract hundreds of visitors each day, many of whom book flights to Cebu just to see them. One of the city’s most famous landmarks is a small stone building known as Magellan’s Cross, which locals claim was built by the well-known Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the 16th century.

Other notable buildings in the City of Cebu include the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, a large stone church built in the 16th century that is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines. Fort San Pedro, a stone military fort built by the Spanish in the early 18th century, during the Philippines’ Spanish Colonial period, is located in the City of Cebu’s Plaza Independencia. Today a museum that is open to the public, Fort San Pedro was once an important fortification used for fending off attacks by pirates and invaders from nearby Muslim countries who were looking to capture the Roman Catholic settlement.

The City of Cebu is the main education hub for the southern part of the Philippines. Cheap flights to Cebu are often booked by students from other parts of the Philippines, as well as from nearby countries, who come to the city to study. Cebu is home to several colleges, universities, and professional schools.
