Pakistan’s capital city, Islamabad is located in a mountainous region in the northern part of the country. Known for its cleanliness, low crime rate, and scenic beauty, the city is home to about 1.2 million residents. A relatively new city, especially for the Middle East, Islamabad was founded in the 1960s to replace the country’s former capital, Rawalpindi.

Flights to Islamabad arrive at Islamabad International Airport (ISB), which is located about 16 miles south of the city center. Islamabad International Airport is Pakistan’s largest and second busiest by passenger traffic, as well as the country’s newest airport. The airport opened in May 2018 and currently can serve 9 million passengers a year. Plans to expand the airport will make flights to Islamabad, Pakistan, accessible to more than 25 million passengers a year by 2024.

Islamabad International Airport is the hub for Pakistan International Airlines and is home to the Pakistan Air Force’s Nur Khan Base.

Ground transportation into Islamabad from the Islamabad International Airport is available via the city’s rapid transit bus system, the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus. Private transport is also available via taxi or Uber.

Travelers arriving on flights to Islamabad often come to the city for business purposes. The city is home to the Islamabad Stock Exchange and is a major contributor to Pakistan’s economy. Islamabad is home to several software companies and other information technology firms that employ thousands of people. Two large science park complexes are located in the city, Awami Markaz IT Park, which is home to more than 35 high-tech companies; and Evacuee Trust, which is home to nearly 30. Several multinational high-tech companies have moved to Islamabad from nearby India in recent years to take advantage of the city’s educated workforce and modern infrastructure.

Many visitors to Islamabad also travel to the city as tourists. The city’s contemporary Faisal Mosque, built in the 1960s, is Islamabad’s unofficial city symbol. In addition to the nearly 24 thousand local worshipers who pray there daily, the mosque attracts thousands of tourists each day.

Another popular tourist attraction in Islamabad is the Pakistan Monument. Built in 2007, the domed building represents Pakistan’s sovereignty. Paying a visit to the Pakistan Monument is an act of national pride for many Pakistani people who live in other parts of the country.

Many of the country’s best museums are located in Islamabad as well. These include the Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage, the Lok Versa Museum, and the National Art Gallery, all of which attract hundreds of visitors each day. Many tourists who book flights to Islamabad make it a point to check out these amazing museums and galleries.

Islamabad is also a popular destination for hikers. In addition to the city’s location in close proximity to the mountain trails at Margalla Hills National Park, Islamabad is home to Trail 3, a steep and challenging hiking trail that leads to the summit of Pir Sohawa. Trail 3 offers its users great views of the city and its surrounding area from several points along its route.

Cheap flights to Islamabad are frequently booked by students who travel to the city to study. Islamabad is home to many of the country’s best universities and educational institutions, including 26 colleges offering undergraduate degree programs. These include the National University of Sciences and Technology; the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology; the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences; Air University; Bahria University; the Center for Advanced Studies in Engineering; and the Federal Urdu University of Arts. Islamabad is also home to Allama Iqbal Open University, the second-largest university in the world by student enrollment. Many of Allama Iqbal Open University’s students attend classes remotely.

In addition to the many travelers who book domestic flights to Islamabad from other parts of Pakistan, many international visitors also travel to the city. Direct flights to Islamabad from the United States can be booked from many of the country’s larger cities, such as New York City (JFK to Islamabad) and San Francisco (SFO to Islamabad).
