One of two international airports serving Japan’s densely populated capital region, Tokyo-Narita International Airport (NRT) is the country’s busiest airport in terms of air cargo traffic and passengers who book flights to NRT. The airport serves as a major hub for All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Jetstar Japan, and Peach Aviation and serves as a gateway to travel in and out of Japan.
Narita Airport is currently home to three terminals. Plans to replace these terminals with a single larger terminal were announced in September 2022. Construction dates have yet to be publicized, nor is much information available as to how these plans will affect flights to Narita, Japan.
NRT is located about one hour away from Tokyo’s city center by car. Passengers who take flights to Narita Airport can also ride into the city on the Narita Rapid Railway, which was built in 2010. The ride from NRT to Nippori Station in Tokyo on the rapid railway takes about 40 minutes.
Flights to Narita Airport are offered by nearly all large international airlines and are available from most of the world’s airports. Many passengers choose to fly business class to NRT due to exceptionally long flight times. Even nonstop flights to NRT that originate from cities on the West Coast of North America, such as Los Angeles (LAX) to NRT, can involve up to 12 hours of travel time.
Many travelers who book flights to NRT come to Tokyo for business reasons. The city is one of the world’s largest business hubs and is home to more than 100 universities. It’s no surprise that the city sees frequent arrivals from LAX to NRT and San Francisco (SFO) to NRT in business class. Most large corporations with offices in Tokyo are concentrated in Marunouchi Quarter, the city’s business district. The region is a major center for electronics manufacturing. Hitachi, Toshiba, Sony, and NEC Corp., are based in Tokyo. The greater Tokyo area is also home to companies that manufacture automobiles and textiles.
Aircraft enthusiasts who have a layover at NRT can visit the Museum of Aeronautical Science, located on Narita Airport’s grounds. The museum, which opened in 1989, has a number of airplanes on permanent display both inside of its building and outdoors.
Travelers who take flights to Narita, Japan and find themselves in Terminal 2 can take advantage of the duty-free shopping at Narita 5th Avenue, Japan’s largest duty-free mall.
Other amenities available to passengers who book flights to NRT include a capsule hotel, located near Terminal 2; a medical center and dental office; nap rooms; showers; hair and nail salons; art galleries; restaurants; shops; and several lounges operated by various airlines and credit card companies.
