A major port city on Colombia’s northern Caribbean coast, Cartagena has a history that dates back several thousand years, to 4000 BCE, when the region was settled by an ancient indigenous society. Today, Cartagena is a bustling modern city that has a population of more than one million people. It is one of South America’s largest port cities.
Flights to Cartagena arrive at Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG), which is located north of Cartagena’s city center in the suburb of Crespo. The airport is named after former Colombian President Rafael Núñez. Several airlines offer international flights to Cartagena, Colombia, including Delta, American Airlines, JetBlue, Air Canada, and KLM.
Passengers arriving at Rafael Núñez International Airport can travel into the city on Cartagena’s bus rapid transit system, Transcaribe, which has 16 stations throughout Cartagena’s urban area. Taxi service and car rentals are also available at the airport.
Business travelers who book flights to Cartagena often work in shipping and logistics or for one of the several companies that operate plants and factories in and around the city. These include Dow Chemical, Dole fruit, and Distribuidora Ltda Refrigeration.
Tourism is also one of Cartagena’s major industries. Cartagena is a popular destination for travelers from the United States, especially those living in cities with large populations of Colombian people. Flights from Miami to Cartagena and flights to Cartagena from NYC (New York City) arrive in the city multiple times per day.
Visitors to Cartagena come to see the city’s historic architecture including its many fortification walls, which were built between the 16th and 18th centuries by the Spanish to help fend off attacks by pirates and foreign adversaries. Combined, the city’s walls are 11 kilometers in length. They are also among South America’s most well-preserved Spanish fortification systems, which recently earned them status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Other popular historic sites in Cartagena include the Castle of San Felipe de Barajas, a Spanish fort located just outside the main part of the city that was built in the early 1500s; the Cathedral of Cartagena de Indias, built in the late 15th century; the Puerta del Reloj or clock tower, which was built in the early 18th century to replace the original gate to the city; and the Museo de Oro Zenu, or gold museum, which houses hundreds of pre-Colombian gold, silver, and pottery artifacts, many of them created by the ancient Zenu civilization which once called the region home. Admission to the Museo de Oro Zenu is free.
Many of Cartagena’s visitors also enjoy the city’s vibrant nightlife. Cartagena is home to many theaters and concert venues that offer performances several times a week. The city’s dance clubs are typically open until the wee hours of the morning, and Cartagena’s restaurants and coffee houses often serve customers until nearly midnight.
Spanish-speaking students from throughout South America, the Caribbean, North America, and Europe often take cheap flights to Cartagena in order to study at one of the city’s two major universities, the University of Cartagena and the Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar. The University of Cartagena, also called UniCartagena, offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a variety of subjects. Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar, the city’s technical college, has been consistently ranked as one of the top five universities in the country.
Travelers also book flights to Cartagena, Colombia, to attend one of the city’s annual festivals, of which there are several. The city hosts the Cartagena International Music Festival each January, a 10-day event that attracts classical music enthusiasts, classical musicians, and music teachers from around the world.
The International Film Festival of Cartagena is held in the city each March. During June and July, Cartagena hosts its annual Summer Festival, and in December jazz music fans and musicians come to the city to attend the annual Jazz Festival Under the Moon. The festival, which has been held every year since 1980, includes nightly concerts, parties, and street and café performances.
