Turkey’s densely populated capital city, Ankara, is home to more than 5 million people. After Istanbul, it is the country’s second-largest urban region. Ankara has a long history that dates back to nearly 300 BCE, when the city was called Galatia. Over the centuries, Ankara has been ruled by the Celts, the ancient Romans, and the Ottomans, among many others. Tourists book tickets to Ankara for a variety of reasons. In addition to the city’s many archaeological sites, including a well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater, it is also home to several historic buildings, monuments, mosques, and churches.

 Among the most well-known of Ankara’s historic sites is the Ankara Castle and Citadel. Located on a high hill overlooking the city, the fortress dates back to the 8th century BCE, when it was first built. The castle is today a museum that is open to the public. The area of the city where the castle is located is also home to many other historic structures that date back several centuries, offering quite the historical day trip to tourists looking to submerge themselves in ancient culture.

Ankara is one of Turkey’s main cultural centers. Many travelers fly to Ankara to attend performances by one of the city’s four symphony orchestras and the Turkish State Opera and Ballet. The city also hosts a popular annual music festival, The Ankara International Music Festival, that attracts thousands of visitors from throughout Turkey and other countries in Europe and Asia.

The city is home to more than ten museums including the State Art and Sculpture Museum; the TCDD Open Air Steam Locomotive Museum; the Ankara Aviation Museum; and the METU Science and Technology Museum, which is owned and managed by the city’s Middle East Technical University.

Ankara is home to sixteen universities and has a large population of students. Students from throughout Turkey and the Middle East fly to Ankara to study in the city. Many of the universities in Ankara are ranked among the best in the country. These include Ankara University; the TOBB University of Economics and Technology; the Middle East Technical University, and Gazi University.

Notable people from Ankara include Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, and Joe Strummer, co-founder and guitarist of the British punk rock band, The Clash.
