The largest city on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, Sapporo is considered to be one of Japan’s most beautiful cities. Known for its cultural attractions, Sapporo is also a major center for brewing beer, as its namesake adorns a popular beer known around the world. More than 2 million visitors book tickets to Sapporo each February to attend The Sapporo Snow Festival, a weeklong celebration of winter held in the city’s Odori Park. Flights to Sapporo arrive at one of two international airports. The closest airport to the city, Okadama Airport (OKD), is located about five miles north of Sapporo’s city center. The region’s larger airport, New Chitose International Airport (CTS), serves flights from around the world. New Chitose International Airport is located in Chitose, a suburb of Sapporo, and handles about 23 million passengers each year. Tourists who take flights to Sapporo, as well as the area’s locals, enjoy visiting the Sapporo Brewery. The oldest brewery in Japan, Sapporo Brewery opened in 1876. Visitors can explore the Sapporo Beer Museum and learn all about its rich, brewing history. There is also a Sapporo Beer Garden on site, where visitors can relax and enjoy a cold beverage steeped in history.

 

Sapporo is also well-known for its local cuisine. The city is the birthplace of miso ramen soup. According to legend, a drunk customer requested noodles in their miso ramen in the 1950s, and thus, miso ramen was born. Decades later, several restaurants and street vendors in Sapporo sell miso ramen and often compete to see which has the best product. The restaurants include Aji no Sanpei, Ebisoba Ichigen, Teshikaga Ramen, Aji no Karyu, Ramen-Gyoza Hanauta, and others. Many of the tourists who book tickets to Sapporo make it a point to have miso ramen at least once at one of these eateries while visiting Japan.

 

Sports are an important part of Sapporo’s local culture. Cheap flights to Sapporo are often booked by sports fans. The city’s largest venue, the Sapporo Dome, was built in 2001 and has a capacity of more than 42,000. The Sapporo Dome is home to the city’s football (soccer) team, Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo. The Sapporo Dome was also used during the 2020 Summer Olympics to host the event’s soccer matches.

 

Sapporo is also home to a few smaller venues, such as the Sapporo Community Dome, which hosts sports events as well as concerts and flea markets. Other sports venues in the city include the Makomanai Ice Arena, the Makomanai Open Stadium, the Tsukisamu Dome, the Maruyama Baseball Stadium, and the Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center. The Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center is the home of Sapporo’s professional basketball team, Levanga Hokkaido.

Hokkaido University, one of the oldest and most highly ranked universities in Japan, is located in Sapporo. Other universities in the city include Sapporo University, the Hokkaido Institute of Technology, the Hokkaido University of Science, and the Hokkaido Institute of Technology.

 

For adventure-seekers, nearby Mount Moiwa offers a beautiful view of Sapporo and the surrounding landscape. Tourists can take a ropeway cable car up the mountain to an observation deck for a scenic view. In the winter months, Mount Moiwa also offers prime skiing for visitors and locals alike.
